- GREY COHOE -

Navajo, 1944-1992

Grey Cohoe was a highly respected contemporary Native American Artist of Navajo descent. His work is exciting, complex, experimental, imaginative and innately Navajo. He is considered a seminal figure at IAIA in the 60s and 70s. He was friends and classmates with artists TC Cannon, Billy Soza War Soldier and Linda Lomahaftewa under the tutelage of Fritz Scholder, Neil Parsons and Allan Houser. These figures all influenced and defined their artistic styles alongside one another. It is evident from their artwork that they copied, borrowed and shared creative influence greatly and freely. Cohoe was later asked to return to IAIA to teach future students.

Grey Cohoe's artwork is part of several notable collections including the Philbrook Museum of Art, The Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe, The Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, the Arizona State Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C, among others. Cohoe was the recipient of the Southwest Art Award for Excellence in Painting and participated in the prestigious Taos National Historical Landmark Artist-in-Residence Program. He has also been the recipient of several grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Mexico Arts Division. Cohoe’s work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums across the United States, and he has been a featured speaker at art conferences and workshops. Over the past couple years there has been a growing demand for his work and he has been referred to as “the missing link” in this revolutionary period for Contemporary Native American Art.
